The following archetype is an excerpt from Bite Me! The Gaming Guide to Lycanthropes for the Pathfinder RPG. It is just a sample of this book’s fantastic, lycanthrope-based content.

Lycanthologist

Alchemist Archetype

A lycanthologist studies the abilities of lycanthropes, including shapechanging and resistance to weapons other than silver. She emulates these abilities with her knowledge of alchemy, using mutagens to modify her original form and gain animal powers and enhanced durability. A lycanthologist is similar to the beastmorph archetype (see Pathfinder® Roleplaying Game: Ultimate Combat™ (PZO1118)), but focuses more on a werecreature’s special abilities than perfectly emulating animal forms.

Lycanthropic Empathy

At 2nd level, a lycanthologist attunes herself to one type of animal, such as birds, canines, or felines. When under the effect of her mutagen, she can communicate and empathize with animals of approximately the same kind as that type of animal (hawks and ravens with birds, dogs and wolves with canines, small and great cats for felines, and so on). She can use Diplomacy to alter such an animal’s attitude, and when so doing gain a +4 racial bonus on the check. This ability replaces poison use.

Lycanthropic Mutagen

At 3rd level, a lycanthologist’s mutagen causes her to take on animalistic features. When she gains this ability, she must choose one type of animal (such as a hawk, tiger, or wolf—GMs may wish to create an allowable list of animals for their games) for her studies, and gains features of that animal when using her mutagen. This animal must be the same kind as the type she chose for her lycanthropic empathy ability. For example, a lycanthologist who chose canines for her empathy can choose dogs or wolves for her studies, and when she uses her mutagen she gains a furry muzzle and pointed ears like a werewolf. The lycanthologist also gains her choice of one of the abilities listed in the alter self spell, which persists as long as the mutagen; the ability must be appropriate to her chosen animal (for example, she cannot choose darkvision because wolves do not have darkvision). She may select a different ability each time she creates a mutagen. This ability replaces swift alchemy.

Improved Lycanthropic Mutagen

At 6th level, a lycanthologist’s mutagen grants her additional abilities and options. The alchemist gains her choice of two of the abilities listed in the beast shape I spell, which persist as long as the mutagen; the abilities must be appropriate to her chosen animal. In place of one of these abilities, she may instead select DR 1/silver; if she selects it more than once, the amount of damage reduction stacks. She may select two different abilities each time she creates a mutagen. This ability replaces swift poisoning.

Greater Lycanthropic Mutagen

At 10th level, a lycanthologist’s mutagen grants her three of the abilities listed in the beast shape II spell, which persist as long as the mutagen; the abilities must be appropriate to her chosen animal. In place of one of these abilities, she may instead select DR 1/silver; if she selects it more than once, the amount of damage reduction stacks. She may select three different abilities each time she creates a mutagen. This ability replaces poison resistance +2, +4, and +6, as well as poison immunity.

I thoroughly enjoy the book. I feel as though I did not only get a guide on playing lots of different kind of animal shapechangers, but also a smattering of anthropomorphic style characters as well.”

— Ismael A., OneBookShelf Review.

Grand Lycanthropic Mutagen

At 14th level, a lycanthologist’s mutagen grants her four of the abilities listed in the beast shape III spell, which persist as long as the mutagen; the abilities must be appropriate to her chosen animal. In place of one of these abilities, she may instead select DR 1/silver; if she selects it more than once, the amount of damage reduction stacks. She may select four different abilities each time she creates a mutagen. This ability replaces persistent mutagen.

Discoveries

The following discoveries complement the lycanthologist archetype: feral mutagen, grand mutagen, greater mutagen, infuse mutagen, nauseating
flesh (Pathfinder® Roleplaying Game: Ultimate Combat™ (PZO1118)), spontaneous healing (Pathfinder® Roleplaying Game: Ultimate Magic™ (PZO1117)), tentacle (Ultimate Magic™), and wings (Ultimate Magic™).
