Noting that the circus has died down, the Colonel carries on with the briefing.
"Your missions will be of critical importance, and you'll be acting as a surgically proactive and response task force, usually operating on a tactical scale, although we'll certainly be keeping the big picture in mind with regards to your deployments."
"Because your job will be tackling that which the regular military isn't equipped for, you'll be given the best equipment and intelligence we have access to. We're talking cutting edge and, quite often, experimental. You'll also be given a lot of leeway with regards to field command--the job calls for razors, not robots. You'll need to think fast and know how to temper your intellect with your instincts, as we predict you'll often be involved in first contact situations, meaning we won't have much advice to give you."
"Because of their likely priority, your operations will typically also be granted access to our remaining satellite network for the purpose of communications and data relay where coverage is available. That means you'll be carrying head and/or gun cams with near-real time wireless satellite upload capability. Usually this means we'll be about 10 seconds behind seeing what you're seeing."
"In the weeks to come you'll undergo acclimation and task-oriented training to get you all familiar with acting as a team. You'll also be given a tour of the base--well, the parts you're cleared for--at 15:00 hours. You'll each be assigned your own billet in a separate barracks we've recently constructed for you and any similar teams to follow should Lighthouse prove successful. I suggest you get to know each other, look over the information packets the corporal will hand you on the way out and familiarize yourselves with base operations and time-tables. Training begins at 06:00 tomorrow on the parade ground. Sharp. That is all."
Without waiting for any further comments or questions, the colonel leaves the podium and walks past you all to open the door. As he pulls it open, he turns to look back at you all over his shoulder.
"Oh, and one more thing: welcome to Section 51, gentlemen. We don't exist, and now neither do you. Your old life is over, so happy birthday."
He then leaves, closing the door behind him.
[We won't be playing through training, but you'll be doing it for nearly two months before deployment. This is not merely for atmosphere, however: you're each going to be given some free experience points to represent what you're being taught. For most of you this means gaining the Tactics (small infantry unit) skill and Squadmate Quality. I suggest you look both up in Armed Force because the latter will prove very handy during your missions. For those of you who don't have the requirements for Squadmate, you'll see some skill improvements in areas of your expertise. No Metaphysics, though, as there's not really anyone on staff qualified to train any of you further in that area. I'll email you each your revised character sheet tonight.
If you have any questions about your teammates, the base, etc., feel free to ask in the Metagame forum. I'll answer anything I think your characters would have learned during the time you're on base for training.]
