Google offers handy tools for publishers to utilize in marketing

I’ve recently started making good use of both Google Analytics and Google Alerts with regards to Misfit Studios. In the former’s case, I now use Google Analytics to help me track web traffic trends on storefronts where I sell Misfit Studios products that also allow PHP insertions. The resulting information has helped a great deal with figuring out where I need to prioritize marketing, including some surprising results concerning traffic sources one would think would be very valuable but are nearly entirely useless.

With Google Alerts, I can use select keywords to track mentioning of my company and its products across the Internet. Largely this results in kickbacks of information on my own web postings and product release announcements, but it also offers moments of useful information. For example, I’ve never heard of the site, Library Thing, before but today was sent an alert that turned out to be a good review of one of our products, Metahuaman Martial Arts, a useful piece of information that can be utilized in marketing.

Considering how useful I’ve found these two tools offered for free from Google, I can’t stress enough to my fellow small press publishers how much they need to get on top of both services and figure out how to use them to help with their own needs.
