Darwin's World Mutagon for Savage Worlds

The mutagon is a notorious, dinosaur-like mutant reptile that reigns supreme over most of the Twisted Earth’s other life forms. They lord over the Twisted Earth from the top of the food chain, being larger and stronger than most other creatures and a voracious hunter. Purely predatory eating machines, these beasts resemble a humongous cross between a crocodile and hippopotamus. They are, however, far more complex and fascinating than a mere crossbreed.

The creature’s large, blubbery body is covered in fine, black scales that generate protein when subjected to natural light, giving the beast near-constant energy throughout the day. Long, horn-like spikes run the length of its curved, spiny back, and even jut from the creature’s face to impale prey (as if to prevent escape from its massive maw.) The head itself is a mutagon’s most horrendous aspect, making it a giant engine of destruction.

Massive, crunching jaws complete with rows of curved teeth to form the creature’s main weapon, which is capable of rending horses in a single bite. Two pale, baleful eyes sit on either side of the head, but these seem almost vestigial when the entire face is taken in at first glance.

As if its appearance weren’t enough, chlorophyll in its scales produces oxygen that is channeled through subdermal arteries to an organ in the mutagon’s neck. This fuels a magnificent, fire-breathing organ in the beast’s throat, the contents of which are ignited by it clacking its powerful jaw. When it does so, the oxygen being forced through a mutagon’s throat ignites and shoots out in a brief jet of flame.

Each day, a mutagon must eat almost its own weight in food. Its appetite forces it to continuously hunt, although its energy-generating scales permit it to be active during daylight. These surprisingly fast monsters prey upon beasts such as othydont, fraxx steeds, and gronts, though it will devour horses and mutant humanoids if given a chance.
